Mahjong Sets: American vs. Chinese and What's Inside

The right mahjong set depends on the style you play. American mahjong needs a 152-tile set with jokers and racks. Chinese mahjong uses 144 tiles with flowers and seasons, and Japanese mahjong uses 136. Buy the set that matches your group, and the rest is about comfort: tile size, readability and the case.

This guide explains what comes in each kind of set and what to look for when you compare them.

The core tiles are the same in every set: three suits numbered 1 to 9, four winds and three dragons, four of each. The difference is the extras, and those decide which games you can play.

An American set can play every style, because you can leave the jokers and some flowers out. A Chinese or Japanese set can't play American mahjong, because it has no jokers. See the mahjong tiles guide for every tile in each set.

What's in an American mahjong set

  • 152 playing tiles, including 8 jokers and 8 flowers. Many sets add a few spare or blank tiles.
  • Four racks, which hold each player's tiles and part of the wall. Many racks come with pushers, which slide the wall forward.
  • Dice, to decide where to break the wall.
  • A case, often with a handle.

You'll also need this year's card from the National Mah Jongg League, which isn't included in sets. See the 2026 mahjong card.

What's in a Chinese mahjong set

  • 144 tiles: the three suits, winds, dragons, four flowers and four seasons. Some sets add spare tiles.
  • Dice, usually two or three.
  • Often a wind indicator to show the round, and sometimes scoring chips or sticks.

What to look for

  • The right tile count. Count before you buy: 152 for American, 144 for Chinese. Listings sometimes include spares in the total.
  • Readable tiles. Clear, well-printed faces and corner numbers make a big difference for beginners and anyone with tired eyes.
  • Tile size and weight. Larger, heavier tiles are easier to handle and stand up well. Japanese tiles tend to be the smallest; many Chinese sets are larger.
  • Racks that fit the tiles (American sets). Tiles should sit snugly without wobbling.
  • A sturdy case with dividers, especially if the set travels.
  • Design. Many newer American sets come in bright colors and designer patterns. Choose what you'll enjoy looking at, as long as the tiles stay easy to read.

Brands people ask about

Players searching for a new American set often look at newer designer brands, such as Oh My Mahjong and The Mahjong Line, as well as traditional sets from long-established makers. When you compare any sets, check the published details against the list above: tile count, what's included, tile size and the case.

Travel sets

Travel sets shrink everything: smaller tiles, a compact case and sometimes thinner racks. They're great for trips and small tables. Check that the tiles are still big enough to read comfortably and that the tile count matches your style.

FAQ

How many tiles should an American mahjong set have?

152 playing tiles, including 8 jokers and 8 flowers. Many sets include a few extra blank or spare tiles too.

Can I play American mahjong with a Chinese set?

Not without jokers. A Chinese set has no jokers, and American mahjong needs eight. Some players add stickers to spare tiles, but most groups expect a proper American set.

What is the best mahjong set for beginners?

The one that matches the style your group plays, with clear, readable tiles. For American mahjong, look for clear corner numbers and good racks.

Does a mahjong set come with the card?

No. The American mahjong card is sold separately by the National Mah Jongg League, and a new one comes out every year.
