Spades Score Keeper

Enter each player's bid and tricks after every hand. The score keeper adds up each team's contract, scores nil and blind nil, counts bags, takes off the bag penalty and tells you when a team reaches 500. Your game is saved in this browser, so a refresh won't lose it.

Teams and house rules

Some groups end the game when a team falls to minus 200.

How it scores spades

  • Made contract: partners add their bids together. If the team takes at least that many tricks, it scores 10 points per trick bid, plus 1 point for each extra trick (a bag).
  • Missed contract: minus 10 points per trick bid. Some groups score a missed bid as 0 instead; switch that on under house rules.
  • Nil: a player who bids nil and takes no tricks scores 100 for the team; if they take any, the team loses 100. Blind nil, bid before looking at your cards, is worth 200 either way.
  • Nil and the partner's bid: the nil player's tricks never count toward the partner's bid. They count as bags.
  • Bags: every 10 bags costs the team 100 points, and the count carries on from there.
  • Winning: the first team to 500 wins. If both pass 500 on the same hand, the higher score wins.

Example round

A made contract with one bag: 71

Partners bid 4 and 3, a contract of 7. Together they take 8 tricks. They score 70 for the contract and 1 for the bag: 71.

A successful nil: 151

One player bids nil and takes no tricks: 100. The partner bids 5 and takes 6: 50 plus 1 bag. The team scores 151.

FAQ

What are bags in spades?

Tricks a team takes beyond its bid. Each is worth 1 point, but every 10 bags costs 100, so overbidding safely isn't free.

How much is nil worth in spades?

100 points if the nil bidder takes no tricks, minus 100 if they take any. Blind nil doubles both to 200.

What do you play to in spades?

500 is the usual target. Shorter games to 250 or 300 are common too; set your target under house rules.
